TOS Aroma Carafe designed by SIBARIST

Tetsu Kasuya, the World Brewers Cup 2016 Champion, led the idea development, testing, and promotion of this product.

The Barcelona-based coffee equipment brand SIBARIST was responsible for concept planning and design, while ORIGAMI handled manufacturing and sales. This collaboration began about two years ago, when Tetsu shared his vision:

“Rather than changing the liquid before or during extraction, I want to create a tool that influences the liquid after extraction—so that anyone can easily enjoy delicious coffee.

What if we could apply the concept of a wine aerator to coffee equipment?

Since then, the concept and design have been refined through repeated testing and revisions in both Spain and Japan, resulting in a product that embodies the dedication and craftsmanship of all three parties.

A new coffee experience inspired by the world of wine.

A new coffee experience inspired by the world of wine.

This carafe was developed with inspiration drawn from the world of wine.

By capturing, concentrating, and releasing the aroma of coffee, it delivers a richer sensory experience at the very moment of pouring.

Its iconic, minimalist silhouette and intuitively usable handle-less design define its character.

Bringing a new presence to the coffee industry, it is a design created to leave a lasting impression on those who hold it.

The carafe’s wide base makes swirling easy, while its gently tapered opening effectively retains the volatile aromatic compounds.

Without the need for special equipment or complicated procedures, anyone can easily enjoy the full aroma of coffee.

The carafe’s wide base makes swirling easy, while its gently tapered opening effectively retains the volatile aromatic compounds.

Without the need for special equipment or complicated procedures, anyone can easily enjoy the full aroma of coffee.

With its distinctive shape, the surface area of the base is nearly twice that of conventional carafes. This increased surface area enhances heat transfer, allowing the coffee to cool more quickly while also helping to preserve its volatile aromatic compounds.

Its shape naturally guides your nose toward the point where the aroma is concentrated, allowing you to experience the coffee’s fragrance more clearly while minimizing interference from external scents.

When swirled, the liquid flows along the inner walls of the carafe, promoting the release of aroma.

By using the included distributor,

the brewed coffee flows along the inner walls of

the carafe and falls in a shower-like stream. In addition, the distributor also functions as a lid, helping to retain the aroma more effectively .

Porcelain Carafe Crafted with the Tradition and Artistry of Mino Ware

Porcelain Carafe Crafted with the Tradition and Artistry of Mino Ware

TOS Aroma Carafe designed by SIBARIST

TOS Aroma Carafe designed by SIBARIST

Both the carafe and the handle are made in Japan and carefully finished by hand, one by one.

This is a special handcrafted product that showcases the refined skills of master artisans.

The porcelain carafe is manufactured by Miyama Co., Ltd. in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture—one of Japan’s leading ceramic production areas, known for its high-quality clay and experienced potters.

Ceramics produced in this region are known as Mino ware, which also represents the very identity of ORIGAMI.

The beautiful design created by SIBARIST is expressed through ORIGAMI’s signature Mino ware craftsmanship.

Mino-ware porcelain contains a high proportion of vitreous material in its clay, giving it a distinctive whiteness after firing as well as exceptional strength.

This carafe is made using a traditional technique known as drain casting. Liquid clay slip is poured into a plaster mold, where the plaster gradually absorbs the moisture, allowing the clay to solidify from the inside. Once the desired thickness is reached, the mold is inverted and the excess slip is drained away.

This drain-casting process requires extensive experience and delicate skill—from the design of the plaster mold to the precise control of drying time and the exact moment the piece is removed from the mold.

For this project, in order to faithfully reproduce SIBARIST’s beautiful design in porcelain, the plaster molds were meticulously engineered with careful calculations that take into account the natural shrinkage and distortion that occur during firing. In addition, the drying time of the clay slip is adjusted by skilled artisans each day according to the climate and humidity.

After being removed from the mold, the rim of each carafe is carefully smoothed by hand, then dried, bisque-fired, glazed, and finally fired at high temperature.

Bringing together the accumulated knowledge and techniques of generations of potters in Mino—one of Japan’s foremost ceramic production regions—this product has come to life.

.Clay slip is poured into the plaster mold.

The kiln used for the final high-temperature firing.

At the right moment, the excess slip is drained away and the piece is carefully removed from the mold.

As the carafe shrinks by approximately 13% during firing, the design of the plaster mold requires extensive experience and deep knowledge of the characteristics of ceramics.

Each piece is then glazed by hand, one by one, with great care.

The result is a beautifully white, glossy carafe with a refined finish.

Carefully crafted leather handle

Carefully crafted leather handle

The handle is made of leather and is meticulously handcrafted one by one at PRODUCT BASE SKLO in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

We use vegetable-tanned cowhide leather, which becomes softer with use and develops a natural luster over time, gradually molding to your hand.

Finished in a seamless, minimalist design, the handle harmonizes beautifully with the carafe’s simple, refined form.

From left: pattern paper, cutting die, finished product.

For this product, the leather is machine-skived to a thickness of approximately 1.8 mm.

While carefully checking the condition of the leather, the cutting die is positioned and the leather is cut by machine.

The back and edges of the leather are then polished with cream.

The thickness of the cut leather is measured and adjusted to the appropriate level.

Finally, the metal fittings are attached.

While preserving the same design as the porcelain carafe, this model is also available in glass.

By setting the dedicated distributor onto the glass carafe, the coffee does not fall straight down but instead flows gracefully along the inner walls of the carafe.

By reducing the surface area exposed to air, the release of volatile aromatic compounds caused by agitation and oxidation is minimized, allowing the aroma to be securely retained within the liquid.

The shower-like flow of coffee is also visually beautiful, making the brewing process itself a pleasure to experience. Its distinctive design makes a strong impression in cafe settings as well as in competition presentations.

The handle is made of silicone, offering both heat resistance and practical usability.

Q&A

Product Care Instructions

【Porcelain & Glass】

To maintain the beauty of your carafe and prevent coffee odors and staining, we recommend washing and drying it as soon as possible after use.

Add a small amount of mild detergent and gently wash with lukewarm water using a bottle brush.Due to the narrow opening, we recommend using a wine decanter brush. After washing, rinse thoroughly and dry the carafe upside down.

Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to lukewarm water and soak the carafe for 20–30 minutes. Then, scrub well with a brush and rinse thoroughly.

After washing, drain off excess water and allow the carafe to air-dry upside down.If the inside is difficult to dry, gently absorb the remaining moisture with a paper towel before drying.

After brewing coffee, the carafe may become hot.

For safe use, please attach the included handle before handling.

Do not use metal scrubbers or abrasive sponges, as they may scratch the surface.

Avoid sudden temperature changes, as they may cause damage.

Are the parts interchangeable between the porcelain and glass carafes?

Handle

The handle can be attached to both the porcelain and glass carafes.

Since it is fully compatible with both versions, you may use it as a shared handle.* Please note that the handle is not sold separately.

Distributor

The distributor included with the TOS Aroma Glass Carafe is specifically designed and manufactured to match the exact opening diameter and specifications of the glass carafe.

On the other hand, due to the nature of porcelain, the porcelain aroma carafe may have slight individual variations in its opening diameter.

For this reason, the distributor may not fit properly on the porcelain carafe, and its use with the porcelain model is not recommended.

What is the difference between the porcelain and glass carafes?

The TOS Aroma Porcelain Carafe is a handcrafted product, carefully finished one by one by skilled artisans.

Made from white, high-strength porcelain, it brings together ORIGAMI’s brand identity with SIBARIST’s refined, minimalist design, resulting in a uniquely beautiful coffee carafe unlike any before. Its narrow opening and wide base are designed to capture the coffee’s aroma and release it through swirling, enhancing the sensory experience.

The TOS Aroma Glass Carafe comes with a dedicated distributor.

When used together with the carafe, the brewed coffee flows down in a shower-like stream, creating a visually elegant flow.

As the coffee flows along the inner walls of the carafe, volatile aromatic compounds are effectively retained, allowing you to experience a richer and more expressive aroma.
